Sony PlayStation 6 pricing faces pressure from rising component costs

Speculation regarding the pricing of Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 6 (PS6) suggests the console could face high retail costs due to rising component prices. Leaks indicate that a handheld PS6 version may struggle to launch below $600, driven largely by the increasing cost of LPDDR memory. This component is seeing high demand from data centers used for training artificial intelligence models, which has pressured the entire supply chain.

For the standard PS6 home console, some estimates suggest the price could approach $1,000. Analysts note that transitioning to a digital-only model without a disc drive could help Sony mitigate manufacturing costs. While Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has stated the company does not intend to sell hardware at a significant loss, high production costs for memory and storage remain a concern. If the PS6 reaches or exceeds the $1,000 mark, industry analysts warn it could significantly reduce the potential buyer base.
