Sony PlayStation to delete 550+ purchased movies after StudioCanal license expires

Sony Interactive Entertainment has notified PlayStation users that more than 550 movies purchased from the PlayStation Store will be removed from their libraries on 1 September 2026. The removals are triggered by the end of a licensing agreement with content provider StudioCanal. Titles slated for deletion include well‑known films such as “Terminator 2”, “Rambo”, “Apocalypse Now”, “Hot Fuzz”, “Total Recall” and “Paddington”.

The company sent mass emails stating, “From 1 September 2026, you will no longer be able to watch all previously purchased Studio Canal content and the titles will be removed from your video library.” No refunds or compensation have been offered. The move has sparked criticism and a broader debate about the nature of digital ownership, as consumers who paid for permanent access find their purchases effectively revoked when licensing contracts end. This follows a similar incident in 2023 when Sony briefly withdrew Discovery‑label content before reinstating it after public pressure.
