Sophie Cunningham responds to Indiana Fever offseason criticism
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has responded to recent media criticism and comments from former teammates regarding her role with the team and her public stances on social issues.
Columnist Candace Buckner of The Athletic argued that the Fever should part ways with Cunningham, suggesting her presence might be too turbulent to pair with superstar Caitlin Clark. Additionally, former Fever player Sydney Colson criticized Cunningham’s views on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.
During an episode of her podcast, “No Hesitation,” Cunningham dismissed the criticism, stating, “I literally don’t even care what anyone says about me anymore.” She defended her value to the team beyond statistical metrics and addressed her critics by saying, “Whatever, suck it.”
Despite the public debate, Indiana Fever head coach and general manager Amber Cox indicated that Cunningham’s off-court remarks would not influence free agency decisions. Cox expressed intentions to re-sign Cunningham, viewing her as a key contributor to the team’s second unit.
