Sorgenia withdraws Ranteghetta solar farm plan after municipal opposition

On 7 August 2026, energy company Sorgenia submitted a request to Italy's Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security to archive the authorization procedure for the Ranteghetta photovoltaic project. The project would have covered about 140 hectares in the Lombardy municipalities of Marcallo con Casone, Ossona and Santo Stefano Ticino, installing roughly 107,000 solar panels.

The three municipal administrations welcomed the decision, citing concerns over agricultural land use, landscape impact, and overall environmental sustainability. They noted that the request aligns with recent regional regulations limiting renewable installations to 3 % of agricultural surfaces.

Senator Massimo Garavaglia (Lega) described the archiving as a “victory of the territory,” calling the proposed plant an “ecomostro” and emphasizing the broad local support that included citizens, environmental groups and regional authorities. He said he raised the issue with the national government and relevant ministries as soon as the project was announced.
