Italian energy project cancellations

In early August 2026, Italy’s energy sector saw a series of high‑profile project withdrawals driven by local and environmental concerns. On 5 August, Terna announced it would abandon the planned 380/150 kV Palazzolo Acreide substation in Sicily, citing opposition over the historic necropolis, missed deadlines and the absence of an archaeological study. The same day, the Ministry of the Environment rejected the 470 MW Ittiri Bess electro‑chemical storage project in Sardinia, pointing to incompatibility with the territory and missing regional agreement.

Two days later, on 7 August, energy firm Sorgenia requested that the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security archive the authorization for the Ranteghetta photovoltaic farm in Lombardy. Municipal authorities welcomed the move, emphasizing the protection of agricultural land and landscape, while a senator called the project an “ecomostro.” Together, these actions illustrate a tightening of scrutiny and growing local resistance to new energy infrastructure across Italy.
