Sorolla Museum to open new 2,000 m2 expansion in Madrid
The Sorolla Museum in Madrid is scheduled to open its new expansion to the public on October 15, 2026. The project adds more than 2,000 square meters of space, including temporary exhibition halls, an auditorium, and specialized areas for the management and storage of the museum’s collections.
The expansion, designed by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, was part of a 6.5 million euro rehabilitation project initiated in 2022. While the new spaces will be accessible, the original historic house and studio of the painter Joaquín Sorolla will remain temporarily closed to the public as restoration work continues.
The reopening will be marked by a temporary exhibition titled ‘Tras la casa del artista. Arquitecturas del Museo Sorolla (1905-2026)’, curated by Covadonga Blasco Veganzones, which will run until January 10, 2027. The museum was originally established following a legacy from Clotilde García del Castillo, Sorolla’s widow, and has been operating since 1932.
