Sortelha hosts medieval reenactment of King Fernando I's reign

The historical village of Sortelha, located in the Sabugal municipality, will host the 14th edition of ‘Muralhas com História’ from September 18 to 20. This event transforms the walled village into a medieval setting to commemorate the reign of King Fernando I of Portugal, known as ‘the Handsome’.

As the last monarch of the House of Burgundy, Fernando I’s reign (1367–1383) was a pivotal period in Portuguese history, marked by the Fernandine Wars and the ‘Lei das Sesmarias’. The reenactment aims to bring these historical complexities to life through various activities.

The three-day program includes historical recreations, military camps, artisan markets, knightly tournaments, and theatrical performances. Visitors can experience the atmosphere of the 14th century through characters such as knights, merchants, clergy, and performers. Sortelha, which was recognized by the World Tourism Organization in 2023 as one of the best tourist villages in the world, serves as a natural stage due to its preserved medieval architecture and strategic border location.
