Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil discusses upcoming album with unreleased Chris Cornell recordings

Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil has shared details regarding the band’s upcoming album, which features previously unreleased recordings made with the late frontman Chris Cornell prior to his death in 2017. The project involves surviving members Thayil, drummer Matt Cameron, and bassist Ben Shepherd, working alongside producer Terry Date.

Thayil described the recording process as “forensic in nature,” noting that the band had to deconstruct and rebuild performances around the existing vocals and drum tracks. He characterized the new material as introspective and containing “quirky elements,” while acknowledging the emotional difficulty of balancing their own work with the responsibility of honoring Cornell’s legacy.

Separately, guitarist Kim Thayil is celebrating his 66th birthday. He is widely recognized for his technical skill, having been ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the top guitarists of all time.
