South Aegean Region implements healthcare support in Symi and Kos
The South Aegean Region is implementing several initiatives to support healthcare services and personnel across the Dodecanese islands.
In Symi, the AMKE ‘Galenos’ is organizing a free medical mission scheduled for September 5 and 6, 2026. The mission will provide preventative and medical check-ups in specialties including cardiology, pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and general family medicine at the Symi Multipurpose Regional Health Center.
In Kos, the Regional Council has approved the provision of nine apartments to address the housing needs of doctors serving at the Kos General Hospital. This decision follows consultations with the Ministry of Health and the 2nd Health Region of Piraeus and Islands. Regional Governor George Chatzimarkos noted that housing availability is a critical factor in staffing health structures on the islands. Additionally, the region provides monthly financial allowances to 89 doctors serving in the South Aegean and has begun financial support for 200 nurses and EKAV rescuers.
