South Africa accuses Ghana and Nigeria of spreading false xenophobia claims

South Africa’s Presidency said Ghana and Nigeria are running a campaign to portray Pretoria as a pariah state by circulating false information about recent xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals. Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya told reporters that the false narrative is intended to isolate South Africa on the continent and that diplomatic representatives have deliberately misrepresented routine exchanges.

The government reiterated that it condemns vigilantism, affirms the state’s role in enforcing immigration law and stresses the supremacy of the constitution. It also highlighted ongoing diplomatic engagement, citing recent meetings with France’s president, participation in African Union and SADC initiatives and bilateral visits across the region.

The accusations follow weeks of anti‑immigration protests that have seen forced expulsions and violence against migrants from countries such as Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Mozambique, Malawi and Burundi. South Africa warned that any move by Ghana or Nigeria to nationalise South African assets would damage trade and commercial ties.
