South Africa allocates R600 million and identifies hotspots ahead of June 30 anti‑migration protests

South Africa's government is allocating more than R600 million to a nationwide security operation in preparation for anti‑illegal‑migration protests scheduled for June 30. Acting police minister Firoz Cachalia said police units will be deployed across all provinces and government departments are coordinating contingency plans to keep transport routes, hospitals and key infrastructure operational. The military remains on standby and could be called in to protect critical sites if needed.

Authorities have identified several potential violence hotspots, especially in the Western Cape and other rural areas, after recent xenophobic incidents that left two Mozambican nationals dead and displaced thousands of Malawian nationals. Police have urged citizens to protest lawfully and warned that intimidation, property destruction or any attempt to undermine public safety will be dealt with swiftly.
