South Africa arrests 80 vigilantes linked to xenophobic attacks

South Africa’s government announced the arrest of about 80 suspected members of vigilante groups accused of carrying out xenophobic attacks on migrants across five to six provinces. The arrests were disclosed by South Africa’s Consul‑General to Nigeria, Prof. Bobby Moroe, during a Nigeria‑South Africa Chamber of Commerce briefing in Lagos. Moroe emphasized that the Constitution protects both documented and undocumented migrants and that only authorised law‑enforcement agencies may handle immigration matters. He rejected claims that the South African authorities were behind the violence, calling such reports “fake news.” The arrests are part of a broader effort to restore order and prosecute those taking the law into their own hands.
