South Africa begins mass deportation of over 15,000 Malawian migrants

South Africa's Department of Home Affairs announced that, as of the close of business on 25 June, 15,162 Malawian nationals had been registered for deportation and return, with many undergoing verification at temporary repatriation centers.

The South African Police Service's weekly "Shanela" operations arrested 5,056 people for alleged immigration violations. By 21 June, 89 incidents related to public order and incitement had been filed, up from 53 the previous week, and 164 individuals were detained on charges ranging from incitement to breaches of the Public Gatherings Act. An inquiry into the deaths of six Mozambican citizens in Mossel Bay clarified that only two were linked to local unrest; the others resulted from a traffic accident and a bar‑room dispute. Anti‑immigrant groups such as "March and March" and "Operation Dudula" have urged undocumented foreigners to leave the country by 30 June, and Deputy Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia said police are prepared for possible violence at the planned protests.
