South Africa police ready for June 30 anti‑immigration protests

The South African government placed the country on maximum operational readiness ahead of nationwide anti‑immigration demonstrations scheduled for June 30. Deputy National Commissioner of Police Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili said thousands of officers were deployed across all nine provinces under Operation 30 June, with public‑order units, specialised teams and the SAPS Air Wing on standby. Police warned that any criminal conduct would be met with swift, proportionate action, and noted arrests of four suspects over a home intrusion and the detention of over 2,800 undocumented foreigners in the past week.

The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria issued advisories urging Ghanaian nationals to remain vigilant, stay indoors, keep travel documents handy and avoid protest zones. The mission confirmed that no Ghanaian individuals had been detained in connection with the unrest and pledged continued diplomatic monitoring and support. Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, emphasized that the embassy would maintain dialogue with South African authorities and advise the community to limit movements until safety can be assured.
