South African President Cyril Ramaphosa urged African nations to cooperate on migration at the opening of the Pan‑African Parliament, warning that unchecked cross‑border movement threatens security and social cohesion. He made the appeal as South Africa grapples with a surge of anti‑foreigner attacks that have killed at least four migrants and prompted more than 160,000 foreign nationals to leave the country in the past two months.

Ghana has asked the African Union to convene a debate on the violence, and two Ghanaian citizens have filed petitions with the International Criminal Court. South Africa’s International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola affirmed the government’s backing of AU talks and alignment with regional migration protocols. The government also announced a plan to spend over R10 billion across three years on border fencing, patrols, intelligence and aerial surveillance to curb illegal migration.

MTN Group President Ralph Mupita argued that Africa’s future depends on expanding economic opportunity rather than focusing on migration crises, echoing UN Resident Coordinator Nelson Maffuh’s view that migration challenges cannot be solved by scapegoating and require good policies and regional cooperation.
