South Africa deportes 53,000 migrants amid health‑care rights debate

South Africa's Department of Home Affairs reported that 53,449 foreign nationals were processed for deportation or repatriation by 11 July 2026, with Malawians accounting for more than 80 percent of those removed. The crackdown follows weeks of anti‑immigration protests and comes as President Cyril Ramaphosa balances enforcement with labour‑market needs, spending public funds on detention, transport and security while targeting employers of undocumented workers.

Constitutional experts and health‑care advocates note that South Africa’s Constitution guarantees the right to health care for "everyone," including refugees, asylum seekers and, in many cases, undocumented migrants. Public facilities may not refuse emergency treatment regardless of immigration status, and health programmes for HIV, TB and maternal care extend to foreign nationals. Advocacy groups warn that despite the legal framework, migrants still face refusals and discrimination, raising concerns about the government’s ability to uphold constitutional protections while pursuing the large‑scale deportation drive.
