South Africa migration: Over 178,000 immigrants depart

More than 178,000 African immigrants have left South Africa in recent months due to intensified government crackdowns on undocumented migration and violent anti-immigration protests. Data from home countries indicate that over 115,000 people returned to Zimbabwe and more than 56,000 returned to Malawi since late May. Other nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, and Lesotho, have reported returns of over 1,000 citizens each.

The exodus consists of both official deportations and individuals choosing to accept repatriation offers. While South African authorities reported approximately 19,000 official deportations since April, many others left following nationwide demonstrations on June 30, which protesters used as a deadline for undocumented migrants to depart. Protesters argue that illegal migration contributes to high unemployment and strains public services.

Human rights groups have expressed concern regarding the humanitarian impact of this sudden movement, noting that thousands of children have been pulled from schools and HIV patients have faced interruptions to life-saving medical treatments. The South African government has indicated plans to maintain strict enforcement through increased border security and the establishment of immigration courts.
