South Africa prepares for local government elections amid service delivery concerns
South Africa is approaching local government elections on November 4, with voters expressing significant frustration over failing basic services. Issues such as inadequate sanitation, water shortages, electricity instability, and high unemployment are central concerns for the more than 29 million registered voters.
In regions like Khayelitsha, lack of sanitation and crime in communal areas have impacted residents, while water cuts in Durban have left some neighborhoods facing outages lasting up to two weeks. The political landscape is increasingly fragmented, with traditional powerhouses like the African National Congress (ANC) facing eroded support as voters weigh whether to participate in the polls.
Logistical challenges also loom. In the Makana region, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has identified several voting stations facing difficulties, including poor road conditions, lack of electricity, and insufficient water or sanitation. Additionally, voters are reminded that unlike national elections, they must cast their ballots at their specific registered voting stations to ensure local representation.
