South Africa energy recovery faces pressure from data center demand

South Africa is experiencing a market-driven energy recovery as private citizens and businesses invest heavily in rooftop solar to bypass years of rolling blackouts caused by state utility Eskom’s inability to maintain its coal fleet. Private installed capacity grew from approximately 2,260 megawatts in mid-2022 to around 7,300 megawatts by late 2025.

This stability is now facing pressure from a surge in data center investment. As a dominant AI hub for the continent, South Africa hosts 56 data centers, accounting for roughly 1% of global AI data center capacity. The high, continuous demand from these facilities is creating competition for grid access, potentially placing data centers ahead of the rooftop solar owners who drove the initial energy recovery.
