South Africa is experiencing a significant expansion of its digital infrastructure, driven by investments from major technology firms such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Equinix. This approach aims to mitigate grid congestion and curtailment, allowing the state to manage surplus renewable energy during periods of fluctuation.

The broader long-term energy strategy envisions adding over 105 GW of generation capacity and 14,000 km of high-voltage power lines by 2039. Complementing these large-scale plans, private sector developments are also progressing, such as Yellow Door Energy’s 49 MWp Lion Thorn Solar Park in the North West province, which is expected to be operational by 2028.
