South Africa faces severe weather warnings and El Niño water concerns

South Africa is facing significant weather volatility, with experts warning of a potential water security crisis due to El Niño. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall for the upcoming summer months, which could severely impact dams and rivers.

Simultaneously, the country is experiencing immediate extreme weather conditions. SAWS has issued Yellow Level 2 warnings for severe thunderstorms across much of the Eastern Cape and parts of KwaZulu-Natal, bringing risks of localized flooding, lightning, and damage to infrastructure. High temperatures are also being reported, with Musina reaching 36°C and heatwave advisories in effect for north-western KwaZulu-Natal.

Additionally, extremely high fire danger warnings have been issued for the Northern Cape, North West, Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal. Residents are advised to take precautions against lightning-induced electrical surges and to manage water resources carefully in anticipation of a hotter, drier season.
