South Africa focuses on energy, water, and AI infrastructure

South African industries are facing critical infrastructure challenges regarding energy and water security. Following a decade of electricity instability, businesses have increasingly turned to on-site solar systems, batteries, and microgrids to ensure operational continuity. There is now a growing shift toward prioritizing water security, as aging municipal infrastructure and erratic supply threaten to halt production lines and cooling systems.

Simultaneously, South Africa is positioning itself within the global artificial intelligence race by leveraging its physical infrastructure. Eskom has reportedly entered discussions with major technology firms, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, regarding the use of surplus electricity to power data centers. Microsoft has already committed R5.4 billion to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in the country by the end of 2027. Experts suggest that the nation's success will depend on its ability to integrate energy, connectivity, and engineering expertise into a functional economic ecosystem.
