South Africa's migrant exodus strains economy and agriculture
More than 160,000 undocumented migrants have left South Africa following anti‑immigrant protests that culminated on an unofficial June 30 deadline set by groups such as March and March and Operation Dudula. The demonstrations resulted in over 900 arrests, at least one death and reports of up to five migrants killed.
The outflow has created a sharp labour shortage in key sectors. Farm owners say up to 80 % of the sugar‑cane workforce vanished overnight, while citrus growers warn that higher labour costs could cut export volumes. Migrants, who make up about 5 % of the population and contribute roughly 9 % of GDP (about US$43 billion), were previously essential for seasonal agricultural work.
Individual incidents highlight the violence: on 29 June 60‑year‑old Malawian resident Eibraheem Hussein was beaten and robbed; on the night of 16 July a gang robbed at least four Malawian households and forced residents to flee. The combined political unrest and economic impact has raised concerns about South Africa’s macro‑economic stability amid an unemployment rate of 32.7 %.
