South Africa matriculants face intense exam pressure
The Solidariteit Skoleondersteuningsentrum (SOS) has raised concerns regarding the 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSS) examination schedule in South Africa. The organization warns that some matriculants face excessive pressure due to the concentration of demanding papers, with some students required to write up to eight papers within just eight school days.
Specifically, students taking mathematics, physical sciences, accounting, and English are scheduled for seven papers between 22 October and 2 November. On 28 October, some must complete both English Paper 1 in the morning and Accounting Paper 2 in the afternoon. SOS education specialist Maryke Bellingan emphasized that exam schedules should account for emotional well-being, preparation time, and mental fatigue rather than just calendar availability.
The SOS previously requested the Department of Basic Education to revise the timetable in June. Similar concerns were raised earlier this year by Christo Vorster, principal of Hoërskool Outeniqua, who addressed the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube. Additionally, the SOS noted that students with exam accommodations may be disproportionately affected, as two three-hour papers in one day could result in up to seven and a half hours of testing for those receiving extra time.
