South Africa 2026 matric examination period

Overview

The 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations officially commenced in South Africa on 13 October, with a record 962,832 candidates registered, including 815,051 full-time and 147,781 part-time students. The examination period is scheduled to run until 26 November.

Prior to the start, students participated in pledge-signing ceremonies to reaffirm commitments to academic integrity. During a provincial ceremony in the Free State, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged learners to remain focused and avoid lapses in judgment. To safeguard integrity, the Department of Basic Education implemented a zero-tolerance policy against cheating, featuring candidate and parent pledge agreements and a 24-hour hotline. Strict regulations are also in place regarding stationery, identification, and the prohibition of electronic devices.

Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube and Deputy Minister Reginah Mhaule conducted oversight visits to centers in Gauteng and Mpumalanga to monitor administrative readiness. The department reported a smooth start to sessions, including Computer Applications Technology (CAT) Paper 1 Practical and various language papers.

As the exams progress, the Solidariteit Skoleondersteuningsentrum (SOS) has raised concerns regarding the intensity of the schedule. The organization warns that some matriculants face excessive pressure due to a high concentration of demanding papers, noting that some students must write up to eight papers within eight school days. SOS education specialist Maryke Bellingan emphasized that schedules should account for “emotional well-being, preparation time, and mental fatigue rather than just calendar availability.”

By 26 October, students entered another intensive week of testing, including mathematics, various African language papers, and physical sciences.
