South Africa opens special vote applications for 2026 elections
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has opened applications for special votes ahead of the 2026 local government elections. The application period began on Monday, 21 September, and will close on 12 October at 17:00.
Special votes are available for registered voters who cannot visit their designated voting stations on election day, which is scheduled for 4 November. There are two categories of special voting: home visits for those physically unable to travel, and early voting at registered stations on 2 or 3 November for those who can travel but are unavailable on election day.
Voters can apply through the IEC website, by sending their ID number via SMS to 32249 (at a cost of R1 per SMS), or by submitting a manual application form at a local IEC office. The IEC will notify applicants of the outcome via SMS.
