South Africa police arrest five during anti-immigration protests

Police in KwaZulu‑Natal arrested five suspects, aged 14 to 27, for breaking into a spaza shop in Hammarsdale (Woody Glen) on the morning of June 30. The suspects were charged with malicious damage to property and business burglary. Police said the arrests were part of efforts to prevent criminal exploitation of the nationwide anti‑immigration marches.

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi praised the largely peaceful nature of the demonstrations, urging citizens to exercise their constitutional right to protest responsibly. Security agencies highlighted extensive preparations to avoid a repeat of the July 2021 unrest, and pledged to enforce the law against any violence or looting.
