South Africa prepares for local government elections on November 4
South Africa is set to hold local government elections on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has announced that special voting will occur on November 2 and 3, from 08:00 to 17:00, while polling stations will be open from 07:00 to 21:00 on Election Day.
Voters are required to present an acceptable identity document, such as a smart ID card, a green barcoded ID book, or a valid temporary identity certificate. Driver’s licenses, passports, and student cards are not permitted for voting purposes.
The upcoming elections follow a Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement from Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, which included a R10-billion measure to provide temporary fuel relief. The fuel levy reduction includes a decrease of R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3 per litre for diesel, aimed at easing household pressure on transport and food costs. However, economic challenges remain, with unemployment rates reported at 32.7% overall and exceeding 60% for citizens aged 15 to 24.
