South Africa prepares for municipal elections on 4 November

South African political parties are intensifying campaigns ahead of the municipal elections scheduled for 4 November. The upcoming vote focuses on service delivery, unemployment, corruption, and the management of major cities.

The African National Congress (ANC) is seeking to regain support following the loss of its parliamentary majority in 2024. President Cyril Ramaphosa has focused his campaign on improving access to housing, water, and sanitation, particularly in underserved communities.

In contrast, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is campaigning on platforms of financial discipline, anti-corruption, and competent administration. In Johannesburg, mayoral candidate Helen Zille has pledged to repair city finances and improve infrastructure. Meanwhile, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have criticized leaders for prioritizing political spectacle over the needs of residents.

The Electoral Commission has urged citizens to verify their registration status and voting locations via its official website to ensure participation in the elections, which determine the leadership of municipalities and metropolitan councils.
