South Africa reinstates National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the reinstatement of National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, effective Monday, 19 October 2026. Masemola returns to his position following a six-month precautionary suspension that began in April 2026.

The suspension was linked to criminal charges involving a controversial South African Police Service (SAPS) healthcare tender awarded to Medicare24 Tshwane District. The contract, which was initially valued at R360-million, was subject to allegations of contravening the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). Investigations into the tender followed an internal audit that uncovered irregularities, leading to the cancellation of the contract in May 2025 after approximately R50-million had been paid.

In September 2026, the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi, called for the withdrawal of all charges against Masemola, citing insufficient evidence to secure a conviction. A Pretoria court subsequently formalized the withdrawal of the charges, leading to the President's decision to lift the suspension.
