South Africa rejects US claim of white Afrikaner refugee emergency

The South African government and advocacy organisations for the Afrikaner white minority rejected the Trump administration’s assertion that a humanitarian emergency exists for white South Africans. The United States said it would raise its refugee cap by 10,000 places for white Afrikaners, calling the situation an “unforeseen emergency” and blaming recent “incitement of racially motivated violence” in South Africa, though no specific evidence was offered.

South Africa’s foreign ministry said accusations of systemic persecution of Afrikaners were unfounded and noted that some beneficiaries of the programme have already returned to the country. The Afrikaner trade union Solidariteit said refugee status is not a viable solution for its members and that it is unaware of any emergency. AfriForum, a lobbying group for Afrikaners, also said it has no information about such a crisis.

Critics argue the policy politicises refugee protection and diverts slots from people fleeing wars and natural disasters. Social‑justice researcher Bryony Fox warned that “this risks politicising refugee protection in a way that may ultimately weaken the legitimacy and universality of the refugee regime itself.”
