South Africa prioritizes battery storage and gas power to stabilize grid
South Africa is prioritizing battery energy storage systems (BESS) and gas-to-power projects to stabilize its electricity grid and prevent market failure. Under the Integrated Resource Plan 2025 (IRP 2025), the government has announced an initial 9.6GW capacity expansion, consisting of 4.6GW of battery storage and 5GW of gas-fired power.
This strategy aims to address grid congestion and curtailment, where surplus renewable energy cannot be utilized due to infrastructure constraints. By investing in storage and dispatchable gas power, the Department of Electricity and Energy intends to manage surplus electricity and provide reliable supply when renewable output fluctuates. The broader long-term goal includes adding over 105GW of generation capacity and 14,000 km of high-voltage power lines by 2039.
In a separate development, Yellow Door Energy has broken ground on the 49 MWp Lion Thorn Solar Park in the North West province. The project, which involves PowerChina as the construction contractor, is expected to be operational by 2028 and will supply renewable electricity to businesses via solar wheeling.
