South Africa issues severe weather warnings for storms and flooding

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple high-level warnings across South Africa as a cold front brings severe weather, including thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds. Orange and yellow level warnings have been deployed for several provinces, including Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Cape.

Authorities warn that these conditions could trigger localized flooding in low-lying areas, damage to infrastructure, and disruptions to municipal services such as electricity and communications. Severe thunderstorms may also cause falling trees, hail damage, and risks to travelers due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. While much of the country faces wet and windy conditions, Cape Town is expected to experience pleasant, sunny weather with clear skies.

In addition to the immediate storm threats, the Agriculture Department has noted that El Niño conditions may persist through the 2026/27 summer season, potentially leading to below-normal rainfall in many areas.
