Shadrack Sibiya faces rape, trafficking, and grooming charges
Shadrack Sibiya, a suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday facing five serious charges. These include rape, human trafficking, and the sexual grooming of a 16-year-old girl.
The allegations involve a series of incidents occurring between May and August 2026. Prosecutors allege Sibiya groomed a minor through electronic communications and raped an 18-year-old woman at a hotel in Sandton in May.
During the proceedings, the State revealed intelligence suggesting Sibiya had plans to escape custody and had engaged in witness intimidation via voice notes and videos. Consequently, the State is opposing bail and requested his transfer to the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria to mitigate flight risk and ensure witness safety.
Acting National Commissioner Puleng Dimpane condemned the alleged conduct, emphasizing that police officers must be held accountable regardless of rank, particularly as South Africa continues to combat gender-based violence and femicide.
