South African streaming market sees major pricing and package shifts

The streaming and pay-TV landscape in South Africa is undergoing significant structural changes as major providers adjust their pricing and package offerings to compete for subscribers.

MultiChoice has implemented its largest package overhaul in 15 years, simplifying the DStv lineup. New options include a Stream Starter at R99, a Movies & Series package at R500, and a Premium Stream option at R799 on a 24-month contract. These changes follow the conclusion of DStv’s distribution deal with Warner Bros Discovery. While DStv continues to focus on live television, local programming, and sports, it faces increasing competition from on-demand services.

Disney+ has also introduced updates in the region, including a redesigned application and a new Basic subscription tier priced at R49 per month. This new tier replaces the previous mobile-only plan, allowing access on TVs and laptops, though it is limited to a single concurrent stream and 720p resolution. The updated app also features improved parental controls and content recommendations.
