African pay-TV and streaming market restructuring

Overview

DStv and the broader South African streaming market are undergoing significant structural changes to subscription models and pricing. Following the acquisition of MultiChoice by the French media group Canal+, DStv has initiated its largest package overhaul in 15 years.

In Kenya, the restructuring involves moving from a six-package system to three monthly tiers, including a significantly reduced Premium package. These shifts occur as DStv navigates the conclusion of its distribution deal with Warner Bros Discovery and faces rising competition from on-demand services.

Additionally, Disney+ has updated its regional offerings by introducing a new Basic subscription tier priced at R49 per month. This tier replaces the previous mobile-only plan, providing access on TVs and laptops with a single concurrent stream and 720p resolution.
