Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s trial split, plea deal under negotiation in SAPS tender fraud
South African businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been separated from his co‑accused in the R228 million SAPS Medicare24 tender fraud case. He appeared briefly before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court and is due to appear before the Specialized Commercial Crimes Court, where the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says a possible plea‑agreement will be considered by the magistrate.
The NPA confirmed ongoing discussions with Matlala’s legal team, fueling speculation that he may plead guilty and become a state witness against senior police officials, including former National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola. The tender, awarded in June 2024 and cancelled in May 2025, involved accusations of fraud, corruption and money‑laundering by Matlala, his companies and 12 senior police officers.
In parallel, the Madlanga Commission heard evidence linking Matlala to alleged cocaine shipments sent to Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk, whose testimony was postponed after he suffered a panic attack and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. The commission also examined WhatsApp exchanges suggesting wider irregularities involving police officials.
