South Africa's NATJOINTS secures SADC Summit and upcoming local elections

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has activated a massive security operation in Durban ahead of the 46th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit, scheduled for 16‑17 August at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre. The summit will host 12 heads of state, and Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, chair of NATJOINTS, said law‑enforcement, intelligence and emergency services are coordinating to ensure peace, stability and public safety, including road closures and crowd‑control measures.

NATJOINTS also announced a comprehensive security plan for South Africa’s Local Government Elections on 4 November. After a smooth voter‑registration weekend (1‑2 August) that served as a practical drill, the agency will deploy visible policing, intelligence gathering, protection of election infrastructure, rapid‑response units and crowd‑management teams at more than 26,000 voting stations. Mosikili emphasized a five‑pillar approach to protect the electoral process and maintain law and order across the country.
