A parallel outcry targeted the R370 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, with users demanding its abolition and replacement with job‑creation measures. One poster wrote, “Take away unemployment grants too. Give people their responsibility back. Create more jobs by investing it in the textile industry again.” Others suggested the grant system encourages dependency, with remarks such as “the government pays kids to have kids.” Critics urged that increases be limited to the most vulnerable – disabled persons and pensioners – while some called for the child grant to be restricted after two children. SASSA has not responded to the comments, and the SRD grant remains in place for the current payment cycle.
