South Africa's SASSA grants: status‑check guide and R2 000 survey

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) administers more than 18 million social assistance grants, including the Old Age Pension, Child Support, Disability and Social Relief of Distress grants. Applicants can verify their grant status online via the SASSA portal, through the agency’s WhatsApp line (082 046 8553), by calling the free helpline (0800 60 10 11) or by visiting a regional office. The system shows whether an application is approved, pending, declined or cancelled, and applicants have 90 days to appeal a declined decision.

In a separate initiative, SASSA is promoting a monthly survey that offers a chance to win R2 000. Participants complete the survey online, and a winner is drawn at the end of each month in 2026, with notification via WhatsApp and email.
