South Africa's social security system faces disinformation threat
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is facing a growing challenge from misinformation and disinformation regarding social grants. False information spread via platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook often claims that grants are being increased, suspended, reviewed, or cancelled.
These fabricated announcements cause significant distress among beneficiaries, including the elderly and people with disabilities, who rely on these funds for essential needs such as food, medication, and school fees. The spread of such news can lead to panic, the sharing of sensitive personal information with scammers, and a general erosion of public trust in the social safety net.
While misinformation involves the unintentional sharing of false data, disinformation refers to deliberate deception intended to obtain personal information or undermine institutional trust. Sassa must dedicate considerable resources to debunking these hoaxes and clarifying official communications to protect vulnerable citizens.
