South American livestock markets see rise in cattle retention and breeding stock
The livestock sector in South America is experiencing a period of increased female retention and a push to rebuild cattle stocks. In Paraguay, producers are focusing on nutritional preparation and maintaining stable body conditions in cows to maximize calf production and weight gain. Experts emphasize that avoiding significant weight fluctuations during gestation is critical for reproductive quality and calf development.
In Argentina, the market for breeding animals is showing strong growth. Data from Rosgan and Senasa indicate that between January and August, approximately 530,000 animals were moved for reproductive purposes, a 22% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This represents the highest volume recorded for this period in five years.
Prices for breeding stock are also recovering significantly. Between July and August, the average price for bulls rose to approximately $9.9 million, marking a 59% year-on-year nominal increase compared to the $6.25 million recorded the previous year.
