South American agricultural and livestock market trends

Overview

Agricultural and livestock markets in South America face diverse economic pressures and shifting production strategies. In Uruguay, the livestock sector continues to see high demand; August Hereford Plaza Rural sales saw 8,369 cattle sold (99.15% of total offered), with steers averaging U$S 888 and heifers around U$S 823.

In Argentina, the industry shows contrasting trends. While the pork sector struggles with a trade deficit and concerns over imports, the breeding animal market is growing. Between January and August, approximately 530,000 animals were moved for reproductive purposes, a 22% increase over the previous year and a five-year high. Bull prices rose significantly, averaging approximately $9.9 million in August, a 59% year-on-year nominal increase. Additionally, local initiatives in Formosa continue to promote regional production, with goat meat (chivitos) recently sold at $6,500 per kilo through specialized fairs.

In Paraguay, producers are prioritizing female retention and nutritional preparation to maximize calf production and rebuild cattle stocks.

In Colombia, the Producer Price Index (IPP) recorded a -0.33% variation in August. While the agriculture, livestock, forestry, hunting, and fishing sector saw a 0.01% variation, the year-to-date increase for this sector stands at 9.45%.

In Peru, fruit prices remain volatile. At the Andrés Avelino Cáceres platform, avocado prices rose from S/6 to S/10 per kilo due to seasonal changes, while pitahaya increased from S/13 to S/15. Road blockades in the north continue to impact supply routes to Arequipa.
