South American livestock sectors face varying market pressures
In Uruguay, the livestock sector is positioning itself to capitalize on a global market characterized by reduced meat supply. Ricardo Reilly of the National Meat Institute (INAC) and the Rural Association of Uruguay (ARU) noted that while physical indicators may vary compared to previous extraordinary years, current production levels remain significant. The sector is also benefiting from strong genetic ties with regional producers, particularly in the Hereford breed.
In Argentina, the pork industry is facing challenges due to rising imports and declining profitability. In June, pork imports rose by 39.8% year-on-year to 6,133 tons, while exports reached only 1,310 tons, resulting in a trade deficit. Local producers have raised concerns regarding fair competition, sanitary controls by SENASA, and the importation of meat containing ractopamine. The Ministry of Agrarian Development is addressing these issues through financing tools and trichinosis prevention programs.
