South American musical legacies honored through literature and performance

In Argentina, journalist Néstor Di Paola has presented his book ‘Último Tango en el Sur’, an investigation into the history of tango across 15 cities in Buenos Aires province and Colonia, Uruguay. The work highlights the contributions of composers such as Ulises Lasa and Armando Salgueiro, whose music is tied to the cultural identity of Gonzales Chaves. The book includes over 200 photographs and lyrics, serving as a historical document of the genre in the region.

In Peru, a tribute concert titled ‘Alicia, siempre Alicia – Edición 2026’ will be held at the Teatro Principal Manuel A. Segura on September 20. Directed by Santiago Coco Linares, the event celebrates the legacy of composer Alicia Maguiña. Maguiña’s musical work was declared National Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture in July 2026, recognizing 52 compositions that span various traditional Peruvian genres, including marinera, vals, and huayno.
