South American musical heritage celebrations

Cultural celebrations and historical tributes to musical legacies are occurring across South America.
In Argentina, journalist Néstor Di Paola has released ‘Último Tango en el Sur’, a book documenting the history of tango across 15 cities in Buenos Aires province and Colonia, Uruguay. The work features over 200 photographs and lyrics, highlighting composers such as Ulises Lasa and Armando Salgueiro.
In Peru, musical heritage is being honored through various events. A tribute concert, ‘Alicia, siempre Alicia – Edición 2026’, will celebrate composer Alicia Maguiña, whose work was declared National Cultural Heritage in July 2026. Additionally, the ensemble Cosa Nuestra de Tito Manrique is scheduled to perform ‘Historia de la Salsa Criolla’ on October 24 to mark 25 years of their career.
In Chile, the tropical orchestra La Sonora Palacios is preparing for its 65th anniversary in 2027. The group, which is credited with the birth of Chilean cumbia, is set to headline a version of La Cumbre Guachaca.
