South Australia's Barrier Highway upgrade boosts freight safety

Major works are under way on South Australia's Barrier Highway in the mid‑north to improve safety and reliability for heavy‑vehicle operators. The project includes culvert upgrades at Winnininnie and Bindarrah, a new eastbound rest area at Winnininnie and an upgraded rest area at Bindarrah, each able to accommodate four double road trains and equipped with shelters, seating and bins.

Intersection upgrades at Whyte Yarcowie and Yunta, completed in March 2026, added lighting, widened lanes, turn lanes and drainage, further supporting smoother journeys along the 305‑kilometre corridor between Cockburn and Burra. The $62.5 million Barrier Highway Corridor Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments, with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport overseeing the works. Officials say the upgrades will enhance freight movement, reduce driver fatigue, and drive regional economic growth.
