Australia upgrades freight highways and rest areas

Overview

In late July 2026, the Australian federal government announced two major freight‑road projects. On 26 July, a $181 million investment was committed to a 14.9-km upgrade of the Newell Highway north of Moree in New South Wales. The works will add a heavy‑duty pavement, wider lanes and shoulders, improved centre‑line spacing, protected right‑turn lanes, better drainage and flood resilience, plus upgraded bus stops. Federal Minister Catherine King said the upgrade will address a history of crashes and improve safety for “thousands of locals, tourists and key freight operators”, with construction slated to start mid‑2027 and the main contract awarded in 2028.

Three days later, a $62.5 million Barrier Highway corridor upgrade was launched in South Australia’s mid‑north. The project includes culvert upgrades, new and upgraded rest areas capable of handling double road‑train traffic, and intersection improvements at Whyte Yarcowie and Yunta that add lighting, wider lanes, turn lanes and drainage. Jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments, the works aim to boost safety, reduce driver fatigue and support regional economic growth.

Expanding on these infrastructure efforts, the Australian Government announced in mid-August more than $9 million for the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area (HVRA) initiative. This funding will support eight new rest area projects across four states. New South Wales will receive investments for sites in the Balranald, Bourke, and Lockhart Shires; Queensland will see upgrades on the Flinders, Gore, and Leichhardt Highways; South Australia will gain two new sites on the Stuart Highway; and Western Australia will fund eight informal rest areas in the Meekatharra Shire.
