South Bohemian Region plans national sports center in České Budějovice

The South Bohemian Region is planning to develop a unique national sports center at the Složiště site in České Budějovice. Governor Martin Kuba met with representatives from the Czech Olympic Committee to discuss the project, which aims to serve both regional athletes and national teams.

The proposed complex is intended to include high-level facilities such as a 50-meter Olympic-standard swimming pool with 10 lanes, an athletics hall, a floorball hall, and a recovery center including a hotel. Representatives from the Czech Athletics Association and the Czech Swimming Federation have expressed support, noting a critical lack of such infrastructure in the country.

Additionally, there are discussions regarding the potential construction of the Czech Republic’s first speed skating oval within the complex. While the region views this as the most economical solution, the Governor noted that the inclusion of the speed skating hall depends on securing state support. Former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš indicated that České Budějovice and Žďár nad Sázavou are currently the two primary locations under consideration for the speed skating facility.
