South City Complex fire breaks out in South Kolkata
A major fire broke out on a high-rise floor of the South City Complex, an upscale residential housing complex in South Kolkata, on Friday morning. The blaze was reported around 8:00 AM in Tower 3, specifically affecting the 27th or 28th floor near the servants quarters and a residential flat.
The fire caused significant panic among residents, as thick black smoke covered the area. For safety, electricity to the building was disconnected and elevator services were suspended, forcing residents of the 30-story tower to use the stairs. This created difficulties for children, the elderly, and the sick during the evacuation process.
Seven fire engines were deployed to the scene to combat the blaze. While the fire was eventually brought under control, officials noted that the process of ensuring it was completely extinguished required additional time. There have been no immediate reports of casualties or injuries. The exact cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, though a short circuit is being considered a possibility. Forensic and fire department experts will conduct an investigation once the area is fully secured.
